Special 7: Special Crime Investigation Unit: First Impressions

My very first impression of the show is that the creators (Anima&co, I believe this is their debut anime) really like using the word “Special”. Beyond that, what we have here is an interesting take on the classic crime scene investigation show. Also, it’s probably the only Fall 2019 anime (Aside from MHA) that I will be continuing.

Special 7 takes place in a world pretty akin to our own, except that Elves, Dwarves, Vampires, etc. live among ordinary humans. The intro states that there used to be a power struggle between the races, but today they live (mostly) peacefully. The story follows a green detective, Seiji Nanatsuki, who gets tied up in a bank robbery on his day off. Through this unlikely chance, he meets another detective, Ichinose, also caught up in the heist. They work together to stop the criminals, but this involves Seiji in Ichinose’s crime investigation group, Special 7. Special 7 is a secretive side branch of the main police force that deals specifically in crimes involving the terrorist group, Nine. Seiji’s involvement gets him a transfer and he begins working for Special 7.

Normally, I wouldn’t watch a crime/police show, but the slight fantasy setting we have going on persuaded me to give it a try. So far, it’s your basic police (Think Law and Order or CSI) program, nothing too much stands out, but I do believe the plot will begin to churn more as Nine and the Dragons become more involved.

Character wise, Seiji is your pretty basic protagonist, kind of stupid sometimes but with a sense of justice that can only get him in trouble. Ichinose is the laid back senior detective with all the answers. Special 7 is furthermore filled out with other base characters- a sniper, a samurai, an analyst, a ninja (actually she flies drones but whatever) but I would like them to grow on me as the season progresses, I guess we will see how it goes.

I can’t recommend Special 7 too hard at the moment, maybe it will head towards something better than average. I sure hope so, because the rest of the 2019 anime season has been mostly flop and isekai. I will continue watching Special 7 until it gives me a reason to shut it off!

Leave me comments and let me know what you think about the show. Honestly, at this point I don’t know if it’s gonna blow up or fizzle out. Or worse, just stay average..
